Products and Services

If you or your business needs cast iron parts, we can help. We are a jobbing foundry that can produce castings as small as a few ounces and as large as 100 pounds. We are capable of making castings of varying complexities, from castings that do not require a core to castings that require multiple cores or complex core assemblies.

Generations of knowledge since 1912

Our foundry is a fifth-generation owned and operated family business. That means our knowledge of the casting industry extends beyond the teachings of a classroom to knowledge that has been passed down, and added to, across five generations. Castings aren’t our job – they are our life.

Gray Iron Casting Process

What is Gray Iron?

Gray iron (also known as grey iron) is a type of iron named after the gray color of the fracture it forms. This color is caused by the presence of graphite in the casting. The mechanical properties of grey cast iron castings are determined by the size and shape of the graphite flakes in the microstructure, which are controlled by the materials that are melted together, the materials that are poured into the mold during the casting process, and by the pouring and cooling process itself.

Gray is the most common type of cast iron and the most widely used cast material. It is cost effective to cast and has excellent ability to dampen vibrations, which makes it ideal for use in machinery components. It has acceptable ductility, tensile strength, yield strength, and impact resistance for almost all applications. And, it can withstand drastic changes in the temperature and does not stress as easily. Unhardened gray iron can be more fragile than other cast metals because of the graphite structure; however, this structure is also what creates great wear resistance and vibration dampening.

Gray iron is commonly used for housings where the stiffness of the component is more important than its tensile strength, such as internal combustion engine cylinder blocks, pump housings, valve bodies, electrical boxes, and decorative castings.
